On the most recent meetup with my family, my dad gave me a cassette tape entitled ‘Kel’s Music’ and I had no idea what was on it.

I listened to the tape on the way back to London in my car (which of course still has a tape deck), and most of these tracks I hadn’t heard for 20 years or so. It was music I had made between about 1999 (when I moved to London and got my first own PC) and 2002, just before when I got a record deal with DC Recordings. They were from a time before I had the name Kelpe and was just starting out and making tracks and sending them out to record labels as demos. Learning off flatmates and friends and experimenting with different software (Cakewalk / Sound Forge / Vienna Soundfonts and later on Propellerhead Reason).

Listening back, I was surprised how many pieces of music I’d made that I hadn’t thought about in so long, which were just sitting dormant for all this time. I was pleasantly surprised by how fully formed most of them were, and thought they had a certain innocence and playfulness I may never be able to willingly re-create. Soon after I got back from that trip I also found a couple of CDs in a box from the same era and managed to rip the tracks from these. Taking all the decent ones from the all the available sources, ripping from the tape and CDs, I decided to compile some for a release.

This is is a compilation of most of those tracks, not in chronological order, although the first track ‘Lost in Pace’ is basically the first track I ever made. I can’t really remember the order I made the rest in, but a few have years attached.

I thought I would release these tracks before they get lost in a dusty box for another couple of decades. Releasing them is archiving them in a way, to make sure I don’t lose them again. I hope you get some enjoyment out of them, as I did, making them and hearing them again.

Also, my 10th LP is now finished and will be released in the first half of 2024!
